MOLECULAR DIAGNOSIS TECHNICIAN
An-Najah National University Hospital (NNUH) is a Palestinian leading health care organization. NNUH hosts multiple departments providing the best quality of medical services in Palestine. The Hospital has made tremendous achievements in the promotion of medical science and health care in Palestine. The development of molecular genetics services at the NNUH is expected to offer a wide range of molecular diagnostic assaysto diagnose both patients with congenital genetic disease as well as those with acquired diseases. The molecular laboratory will be using both commercially available and approved assays as well as those that are laboratory developed, that test for less common analytes. The assays are designed, developed and validated by senior clinical scientist in close coordination with the molecular diagnostic technician in the laboratory and treating physicians and hospital departments.

JOB SUMMARY
• The Molecular Diagnostic Technician performs a wide range of clinical genetic testing that will be used for patient diagnosis, prognosis and treatment options.
• Test results are used to diagnose both patients with congenital genetic disease as well as those with acquired diseases.
TRAINING / EXPERIENCE NEEDED
• Bachelor degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Molecular Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, or Medical Laboratory
• Two years recent related experience is preferred

SKILLS AND ABILITIES NEEDED TO DEVELOP:
The molecular technician will be extensively trained by the senior clinical scientist and through the enrollment of continuous education courses and workshops locally and internationally:
• Knowledge and technical competence to perform procedures using molecular techniques.
• Knowledge of computer systems related to the Laboratory.
• Ability to operate related equipment and to use related software.
• Familiarity with Internet web sites specific to Molecular Biology.
• Ability to communicate effectively with others.
• Demonstrated problem solving, organizational and decision-making skills.
• Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
JOB TASKS - A SAMPLE
• Performs clinical molecular genetic and procedures including; deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA) extraction and quantitation, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR analysis, restriction enzyme digestion, gel electrophoresis according to established protocols.
• Performs new clinical genetic and molecular procedures after being developed by the senior clinical scientist.
• Performs additional special procedures/ techniques such as DNA sequencing, and real-time PCR as required.
• Performs laboratory procedures by operation a variety of laboratory equipment, apparatus and instrumentation. Maintains equipment by following preventative maintenance protocols. Notifies the Unit Chief of any malfunctions.
• Applies principles of universal precautions, biohazard, MSDS and laboratory safety to work environment. Participates in lab safety awareness projects and takes personal responsibility for workstation safety.
• Identifies and reports situations related to safety. Operates and maintains laboratory equipment. Recognizes malfunctions in equipment and initiates corrective action.
• Prepares reagents, standards and quality control material to be used for test procedures.
• Uses the laboratory computer for patient data entry, retrieval and preparing laboratory worksheets and reports.
• Maintains reliable technical reports related to the performed tests.
• Enters daily workload statistics into the laboratory information system.
• Maintains standardization and quality control of test procedures and monitors test results. Reports unusual or questionable test results to Unit Chief.
• Ensures that priority tests are assayed and reported promptly and in accordance with established protocols.
• Monitors laboratory supplies and stocks up to adequate amounts.
• Orientates new students and technicians in the use of molecular techniques by demonstration and verbal instructions.
• Develops, evaluates and implements new techniques with the guidance of the seniorclinical scientists.
• Maintains current knowledge in the field of medical laboratory technology in order to recommend new applications and contribute improvement in technical activities of the area by performing duties such as attending courses and lectures as requested and approved.
• Keeps the welfare and confidentiality of the patient paramount at all times by following departmental policies regarding confidentiality.
• Performs other related duties as required.
